During the Annual Councils of 1973 and 1974, the assembled leaders of the world church felt the special presence of the Holy Spirit. These councils were characterized by an atmosphere of repentance, confession, prayer, and recommitment to the task of heralding the Advent message to every kindred, tongue, and people. A special appeal to the church as a whole was published at the close of each of these councils, and they later appeared together, along with an introduction by then General Conference President Robert H. Pierson, in a small pamphlet entitled “Annual Council Appeals.”
